Alexander Sturm Vienna .935 silver gilt guilloche enamel snuff box

Austrian, early 20th century, a superb .935 silver gilt and guilloche enamel snuff box by Alexander Sturm, Vienna.

This box is of the highest quality and would have been made for a very wealthy client. Made of heavy gauge, high quality .935 silver, with four different patterns of guilloche enamels in white and amethyst.

The top has a beautifully painted enamel circular central cartouche depicting a young couple, with him showing her a small songbird in a rural setting. This is framed in gold wire, within a sunburst patterned, white guilloche enamel panel, itself framed in gold, bordered by striped amethyst-coloured guilloche enamel. Each side also has a white guilloche enamel panel, as does the reverse with a lovely zig-zag starburst pattern.

Condition: Generally excellent. All areas of enamel are undamaged. There are some tiny indentations to the silver-gilt trim edging the box, expected due to the softness of the high silver quality. Some minor tarnishing showing through the silver gilt. The reverse has minor surface scratching visible only in a glaring light or detectable to the touch. The maker’s marks are clear.
