An 18th-century antique silver gilt and hardstone (agate) snuff box, probably English, of shaped oval form, the lid is finely chased with leaves, flowers, latices, and, at the front, a dog staring at a duck on a pond.

Caramel-colored agate hardstones in 18th-century snuff boxes were and are still much valued for any inclusions resembling landscapes, animals, or flowers, much as one might imagine a shape in a passing cloud. In this example, it is not hard to imagine looking out of a cave at a dark pool set in sunlit rocks.

CONDITION : In excellent condition with only very minor wear. Shallow indentations in the flat part of the base, which also has slight rubbing showing silver at the edge. Minimal tarnishing.
