A large and finely carved 19th century (c.1840) bull’s mouth shell cameo of Medusa, profile to the right, set in an ornate pinchbeck filigree mount.

For a similar shell cameo of Medusa, see Nineteenth Century Cameos, Michele Rowan, p. 104, pl. 94, and 108, pl. 98 (bottom left). Said to be after an ancient gem, signed 'Socsocle', illustrated in Stosch's Gemmae Antiquae Caelatae, pl. Lxv.

Cameo: 2in (5cm) high, 1.5in (3.8cm) wide.
Brooch: 2.5in (6.3cm) high, 2.25in (5.7cm) wide.

CONDITION: In excellent condition. No damage.. Minor inclusions in the cameo. A professional clean may bring the filigree up a little brighter
