South Staffordshire Bilston Enamel Scent Bottle/Bonbonniere, Ca.1770

A very good 18th-century South Staffordshire Bilston enamel scent bottle/bonbonniere, Circa 1770, of tapering form, with reserves of painted flowers and landscapes, framed and surrounded by gilt scrolls and white enamel chequer, dot, and spray decoration on a deep blue ground, with gilt metal mounts with chased decoration and the original stopper with retaining chain. The gilt metal central mounts hinged, with the scent bottle forming the upper part and the lower half a bonbonniere, or scent box.

Width: 5.5 cm (2.2 in)

Condition: Exceptionally good, with no damage, cracks, chips, or restoration to the exterior and light stress lines to the white enamel interior. The two sections do not close tightly, although a jeweller could remedy that if desired.
