A rare late 18th-century South Staffordshire English enamel patch box, oval in form, decorated with a sepia print of Britannia in a gilt and white jewelling surround, with gilt and jewelled flowers either side, on a light blue ground, with gilt metal mounts. There is a mirror on the inside of the lid and a white interior.

Notes: Most South Staffordshire enamel boxes were transfer-printed with images taken from well-known engravings of the period. Unusually, we have not been able to identify the engraving from which this image of Britannia was taken, in which she appears to be seated in front of a cannon or a ship’s mast.

Measurements:
Width: 5cm (2in)
Height: 2cm (0.8in)
Depth: 3.5cm (1.4in)

Condition: There is some damage to the upper left of the lid (see images), which could be restored. The expected few faint hairlines are visible on the body of the box. The interior has a faint hairline at one end. The mirror has a diagonal line on the left side that appears to be related to the silvered backing, with no crack visible under high magnification. There is light corrosion to the edge of the mirror. The gilding of the mounts is slightly worn, although less than is commonly found on boxes of this kind.
